Don't Lie to Yourself

What does it look like to lie to yourself? The ways are countless and the levels go deeper than you would imagine, but at some point in our lives many of us have probably done it.

The scary thing is if you're lying to yourself and you’ve become so good at it that you actually believe your own lie.

It’s one thing to lie to yourself, recognize it right away and replace it with the truth; but it’s dangerous territory if you’re believing your own lies, it causes you to lie to others when you believe you’re telling the truth. This is spiritually unhealthy for you and anyone you get into a relationship with.

It’s like the classic, “my glass is always half full” syndrome. Seeing yourself through rose colored glasses but ignoring the fact that the glass is still half empty. A few examples of how women lie to themselves, include a woman being medically overweight, she ignores it and thinks her weight is fine; a woman concealing or denying the fact that she has a sexual past and never revealing it to her significant other; a woman being passive aggressive to manipulate someone in a deceptive way and the person is unaware; a woman who is mean but deceives everyone into thinking she’s nice; and the list goes on.

You’re not only putting yourself in dangerous territory with a future relationship, but with God himself. Who is the father of lies? Satan.

“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.”

-John 8:44

If you’re born again, we are not children of the devil, so let’s stop acting like it. If you can lie to yourself, you can lie to anyone. This bad habit of lying to yourself whether knowingly or unknowingly can put you in a state of mental depravity, a place where you do not want to be and this behavior may never stop until you’re too far gone. Some people only lie when it’s convenient for them and it gives them the outcome they need. I’ve seen older "mature" Christian women do this on multiple occasions, the ones that should be teaching the younger women how to conduct themselves.

Whether you think you’re lying to yourself or not, my best advice to you is to ask God to show you the truth about yourself in every area. Ask the Holy Spirit to convict you so you won’t be able to tell a lie, no matter how small. In cases like this, when you’re single and likely living by yourself, there’s not always someone in close relationship with you to call you out on your mess.

You have to develop personal integrity and commit yourself to doing the right thing no matter what. But if you’re self deceived about this topic, which is quite possible, you have to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to remove the demonic deception and to give you a tongue of truth.

“Save me, Lord, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.”

-Psalm 120:2

The devil can also be lying to you and you’re simply believing his lies as truth without realizing it. As a result, you think and act accordingly and live a life of lies that the enemy has convinced you as truth.

Don’t ignore this because when you get into a relationship, you need to be honest at all times and if you don’t get a handle on this now, you’ll be lying to your significant other on a regular basis. This is a sure way for you to lose trust in relationships and for them to end quickly. The bible says whatever is done in darkness will come to the light, so if you’re lying, the truth will eventually come out whether it comes from your mouth or not, your lie will be exposed.

If you truly understand what God feels about lying through scriptures, you’ll be much less likely to do it and see it for how evil it really is.

“God’s Word is the answer to combating the lies of the enemy. And the more we know His Word and get it deep down on the inside of us, the more we will enjoy freedom in every area of our lives.”

"As you do your part to renew your mind, God will do His. Because as you read and study the Word, it becomes a filter in your mind that reveals the lies of the enemy and shows you the truth!”

“All healing begins by being truthful with yourself about yourself.”
